Percutaneous Knowles Pinning in the Femoral Neck Fractures

Abstract
Twenty-six patients, whose femoral neck fractures were treated by percutaneous Knowles pinning, were classified by the stage of fracture, accurateness of reduction and adequacy of pin insertion.
The stability of the percutaneous pinning in the femoral neck fractures was evaluated by whether the displacement of the fracture site took place or not.
The results obtained were are as follows:
1. Of 26 patients, accurate reduction and proper pinning was possible in 10 and 10 were treated by inaccurate reduction and proper pinning, 4 by accurate reduction and improper pinning, 2 by inaccurate reduction and improper pinning.
2. Of 26 patients, 16 had no displacement in the fracture site.
3. Of 26 patients, 10 had shortening of femoral neck (collapse) without varus or posterior angular deformity and failure of pins, which alway ocurred within 4-6 weeks post-operatively.
4. The shortening of femoral neck took place in 5 of 10 patients treated by inaccurate reduction and proper pinning, in 3 of 4 patients treated by accurate reduction and improper pinning and in all of 2 patients treated by inaccurate reduction and improper pinning, but in no case of 10 patients treated by accurate reduction and proper pinning.
